Chargers win first ever GCAA Championship

There's on old saying… Go big or go home. Georgia Highands College did just that capturing their first ever GCAA conference title with a walk off homerun as the Chargers defeated top seed Georgia Military 4-3.
The Chargers started their move through the winners bracket, defeating Gordon State in the opener 5-0. Emily Ferro tossed a shutout against the Highlanders.
Georgia Highlands would advance to face the Bulldogs for what would be the first time as both teams advanced in the winners bracket. Emily Ferro did her part on the mound going the distance once again and allowing a single run on 4 hits. Emma Darrow, Emmalee Freeman, and Ahmani Green led the 4 run attack with two hits and an RBI each against the GCAA Pitcher of the Year Claire Clements. With the win, the Chargers claimed their spot in the championship game.
In the championship game, GMC took a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth, the Chargers proceeded to score two runs and taking a 3-2 lead. With one out in the top of the seventh, GMC centerfielder Kaiden Bradford homered to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh Athens Hudson, who had already homered earlier in the game, led off the inning and belted the game winning walk off homerun. Tournament MVP Ferro went the distance in all three games for the Chargers, pitching gems in each win.
The Chargers advance to host the Mid-Atlantic District Championship starting tomorrow in a best of three series against Gaston College from Region 10. Tomorrow's double header will start at 4pm. If a third game is required it will be played Wednesday at 12 noon.
