Lady Golden Knights Throttle Southern Union
GOLDEN KNIGHTS WOMEN THROTTLE SOUTHERN UNION 62-47 SATURDAY AFTERNOON
CARROLLTON, Ga. – Sharika Pennamon scored 18 points and Sha’Ron Forte added 16 to lead the West Georgia Tech Golden Knights women’s basketball team to a 62-47 victory over NJCAA Division 1 member Southern Union State Community College Saturday afternoon in Carrollton.
West Georgia Tech, playing in its third game in as many days, led from the early minutes as they improved to 3-10 on the season. Southern Union fell to 5-11.
With the win, West Georgia Tech avenged a season-opening 65-54 loss to SUCC in Wadley, Ala.
“I am very proud of my players,” WGTC head coach Kenny Edwards said after the game. “We had a game plan and we stuck to it. They came in focused and played with a sense of urgency attacking on both the offensive and defensive end. Our girls deserved to win this game. We have been playing some good basketball since the Thanksgiving break. I asked them to improve on the small things and take it one game at a time. Tonight we improved in areas we have been struggling with and it showed on the scoreboard.”
The Golden Knights were in control at the half, leading 41-23. Their biggest lead of the game was 25, at 60-35 with 4:50 remaining.
Pennamon was 4-of-8 from the field and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. Forte scored her 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor.
Ta’Corria Mann pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds while scoring five points. Of her 17 boards, 16 were defensive rebounds.
Tierra Green led Southern Union with 14 points.
WGTC shot just 29 percent from the floor, but held the Bisons to 25.4 percent shooting (18-of-71).
The Golden Knights were 20-of-33 from the free-throw line. SUCC only went to the stripe nine times, converting seven (7-of-9).
The Golden Knights forced 23 turnovers.
West Georgia Tech will return to action next Saturday when they host Mid-South Community College of West Memphis, Ark. The women will tip at 1 pm with the men to follow at 3 pm at the Haralson County High School Gymnasium in Tallapoosa.
