Darton wins Eastern District One Title

Springfield, Mass. - Darton State College Wrestling won its second consecutive District Championship on Sunday at Springfield Technical College in Springfield, Mass.
Five Cavaliers - Sean Nugyen, Zach Wright, Bryce Carr, Anthony Smith and Matt Carroll - all finished in first place in their individual weight classes. As a team Darton tallied 133 points to beat its closest challenger, 2nd-place program and tournament host Springfield Tech, by nearly 20 points.
"I believe in people and processes," Darton State head wrestling coach James Hicks said. "Over the last couple of years we found the right people that fit the process we've put in place, and it's working."
The District named Hicks as Coach of the Year.
He said everyone was at their proper weight entering the tournament, but the Cavaliers had to compete with 9 wrestlers and therefore forfeit a weight class. And, going into the tournament, the Cavaliers were dropped to No. 5 in the latest District wrestling poll.
So, to make up for the forfeited weight class and take back some respect, the Cavs had to dominate the majority of their matches.
For Wright, a sophomore, it was a chance to go down in history as Darton's only two-time 141-pound District Champion.
"Coach Hicks taught me some new stuff and helped me keep my hard work up," Wright said. "So it was just a matter of staying with it.
"We went into this feeling like we were going to win it."
All nine of the Cavaliers qualified for the NJCAA Wrestling Championship on Feb. 27, in Des Moines, Iowa, where Darton hopes to make a run at the national championship title. Complete District results can be seen below.
